Babita Malkani is one of the most celebrated fashion designers in India. Her fashion collections have been displayed and admired all over the world. We asked her how she got involved in the fashion industry. To get more insight into what makes Babita tick, we also asked her about her other preferences in life. Guess what the answer was? FOOD!
1. What made you to choose the fashion designing industry?
My early inspirations and talent acquisition have come through my exposure and involvement in my family’s fashion business.
2. Which is your dream location for a show?
Paris Fashion Week is a dream location to showcase my collection as it’s a stunning and beautiful city and, of course, is the fashion capital of the world.
I wanted to create a whole new funky concept for the collection at India Resort Fashion Week, 2013 in Goa using a myriad of bright fluorescents or neons with geometric tie-dyeing and punk-pop inspired embellishments. The perfect getaway from the daily grind and monotony is to allow oneself to transcend into an altered state of awareness called Neo-Pop, wherein I believe in designing moods, not clothes.
4. What’s in store from Babita M as the year progresses?
Fashion progresses with time, keeps changing and repeating over the years, so my collections will be in sync with the trends this season. Also, to look out for in the near future is India Bridal Wear, where I’ll be showcasing an exquisite and grand line of luxury bridal couture wear. Also, Lakme Fashion Week, Winter-Festive, too, is in line.
5. If you ever had to gift your guests an outfit from your collection for a party hosted by you, which would it be and why?
It would definitely have to be the overall sequined sheathed dress from my ‘Neo-Pop’ collection at IRFW, as it’s a must-have for anyone’s wardrobe for any season. It is THE classic, chic, sexy, party dress that’ll make you look like an outstanding fashion icon.
6. Talking about food, what are your favourite cuisines?
I’m a super foodie, love all cuisines, but my favourite is Pan-Asian.
7. Your most fab places to dine for the following cuisines?
Chinese – Yauatcha
Italian – Celini
Indian – Kabab Hut, Punjab Grill
Chaats – Elco
Sea food – Gazalee
Rolls and Wraps – Carter’s Blue
Coffee & Sandwiches – Indigo Deli
Kebabs – Dum Pukht
Ice Creams and Desserts – Haagen Dazs
8. Could you share a recipe with us of your favourite dish?
Stir Fried Chicken with Greens and Water Chestnuts
Set a wok over high heat and add peanut oil. Be sure to swirl the wok to get the oil to coat most of the pan. Once the oil smokes, quickly add garlic, ginger, green onions and chicken to the wok. Saute, stirring continuously until the chicken is lightly browned, for about 2 to 3 minutes. Add water chestnuts along with the green veggies (bell peppers, cabbage and broccoli) and saute for another minute. Add the soy sauce and sesame oil and reduce for 30 seconds. Add chicken stock, cornstarch slurry and season with salt and pepper. Use a paddle to toss the ingredients and be sure that the stock comes to a boil. Boil for 2 to 3 minutes, before serving.
9. Any summer fashion and styling tips for our foodees?
Dress simply, eat lavishly. Keep it light this summer with cottons and linens, sheer is the latest trend. Wear it in georgettes and chiffons with jersey inners. Yellow is the favourite color for every designer in India and internationally as well, so go for sunny yellow, butter yellow, and lemon yellow too, and of course – Stay Stylish!
